As we usher in a new work week, my mind is still transfixed on what occurred in our city this weekend with the heavy rains and flooding. What began as a routine Saturday, playing with Mitchell and Grayson at home, soon turned into a more serious situation as more and more rain fell outside. At 9 a.m., I dressed and began to ride through neighborhoods in District 5 checking on storm water drainage areas and subdivision retention ponds. Never did I realize that many of my constituents would be scrambling to prevent flooding in their respective homes, and some evacuating because of the paramount conditions that existed.
As time passed Saturday and conditions worsened, I began to load my truck with sandbags and deliver them to residents whose homes were threatened with rising flood waters. With help from friends, more than 200 sandbags were delivered to homes in District 5. On Sunday afternoon, Jenna, Mitchell and I met with residents whom I was unable to see on Saturday. Their stories touched my heart, but at the same time I was relieved there was no loss of life. Today I have begun to work on problem areas in District 5 (as a result of the flooding) and will submit the work-order request list to the City Manager.
As we begin the clean up process, the forecast unfortunately brings the threat of more rain this week. I would ask that you please be mindful of the warnings issued by the weather service and law enforcement. If you live in an area prone to flooding, please make plans to take you and your loved ones to higher ground. Likewise, if you see a road block or high water across an area, please do not attempt to cross it. All of these warnings are made with your safety in mind. Your cooperation is appreciated and greatly needed.
Our community has always been one to come together in a time of need. The response from our city departments, staff and fellow neighbors over the past several days make me proud to live in Dothan.
From pot holes to stray dogs and every issue in between, I want the residents of District 5 to know I am only a phone call or email away. I can be reached at 334/798-3599. And please be sure to email me at taylorbarbaree@aol.com if you would like to receive my District 5 updates.
Appreciate the opportunity to serve,
Taylor
