We all know that Dothan City Schools has been hit with severe budget cuts that have affected everything from teacher units (student to teacher ratio in the classrooms) to paper supplies. When word came down of this year's financial limitations Deborah Hinson, Shelly Brady, April Harris and Marty Renojo got busy planning a fundraiser to supplement the teacher allotments (which truthfully don't cover much) for classroom supplies.
"Partnering with the community" is a phrase commonly heard in the school realm and if you had an opportunity to attend this event, the community support was evident! Local television personalities, circuit court judges and school board officials raised hundreds of dollars, to be "bailed out of jail." The Winter Carnival was more than just a maze of games filling each of the four hallways, inflatable fun in the gymnasium, pizza dinner, and face painting. Parents participated in a silent auction for numerous items that had been donated from businesses throughout the city. Vendors filled the music room with jewelry and beauty supplies. Parents could have their children fingerprinted for free. Woof FM was on hand for a live remote. The Woof Wolf and the Chick-fil-a Cows mingled with the children. Mathew Patterson served as the DJ for the dancing room. Complete with strobe lighting and thumping music, this room could very well have been the top attraction for the evening!

As a parent of children at Kelly Springs I would like to say "thank you." Thank you to the faculty and staff who worked all day and then stayed to run games for the children, the parent volunteers, who put in an untold amount of time organizing and decorating for the event, and to the community leaders who showed up to support our school. A fun time was had by all and money was given to each classroom for the enhancement of the children's learning experience.
